MY GOAL-SETTING RHYTHM

Purpose

To help you identify and prioritize your goals in a wholesome way.


What you need

Take some time and space away from your normal day-to-day. Go to a new coffee shop, a book store, a hotel, or better yet, take a vacation to refuel your dreams. This is about realigning yourself with your vision for the world, your vision for life, and your vision for yourself!


Project

Identifying your goals

  1. Personal: Get out a piece of paper, and put the words “personal goals” in the middle. Now think about all things that you want for YOU. Do you want to learn something new? Do you want to travel? Whatever it is, put a 5-minute timer on and start mind-mapping. No erasing or go back, just let your mind flow.

  2. Health/Wellness: Now do the same for health and wellness. What are some things you can do to take better care of your mind and body? In in ideal world, how would your health be? 5 minutes…and go!

  3. Career/Finance: Whether you’re up for a promotion for an enterprise organization, or you’re traveling and running five businesses and want to start your sixth, you’ve got next steps for your career. What are they? Yes, 5 minutes. Map away!

  4. Love/Relationships: Who are the people around you that you want more quality time with? What relationships would you like to build and improve?


Prioritizing your goals

This is the tough part, but it’s also the best part. Take a look at all of the things that you’ve written down, all of it. What’s the story you’re trying to tell yourself here? What’s the story you’re building and…determine the three objectives you will devote yourself to for the next three months.

  1. What is the one thing you can do in the next three months that will make everything else unnecessary? What’s the one thing that can happen that will make everything else possible?

  2. You know this already, but I’m here to remind you again. You probably can’t achieve everything you’ve ever dreamed of in the next three months (or maybe you can), but you most definitely CAN take a huge leap into your dreams while living a balanced lifestyle if you choose to, and if focus on the right things. That’s exactly why we’ve built The Equilibrium Journal, so make the next quarter that very leap. Remember that 90 days is the optimum time to set and achieve goals, as well as build habits. So…set two more goals that will give you the happiest, most fulfilling and balanced life you can live, on that supports not only your vision for your life, but also your vision for the world and your vision for yourself.


Defining + Refining

We’ve found the OKR method to be a great tool when goal-setting. To divide your goals into objectives, key results, and key actions. Here’s how we do it.

  1. Objectives: Take a look at your three objectives for the quarter. Do they feel right? Because if they don’t, chances are, they’re not right. Trust your instinct. Setting the right goals will not only bring you closer to where you want you be, but more importantly, to the person you wish to be.

  2. Key Results: Now under each goal, list 3-5 key indicators that define the success of that goal. How will you know that you’ve successfully achieved your objective? Remember, you want these indicators to be measurable, so add a quantitative value to each of them.

  3. Key Actions: Lastly, under each goal, determine the key actions you need to take in order to get you to your goal. Break your objectives and key indicators into actionable steps—the things you can do, or habits you can adopt.
